RCCB Technical FAQs

Q1: What's the difference between RCCB and RCBO?

While RCCBs protect against earth leakage currents, RCBOs combine leakage protection with overcurrent/short-circuit protection in one device.

Q2: What RCCB sensitivity do I need?

Residential: 30mA | Commercial: 100-300mA | Industrial: 300mA-1A. View selection guide

Q3: How does a residual current circuit breaker work?

Operating Principle:
RCCBs use a core balance magnetic ring to monitor current flow in live (L) and neutral (N) wires. Under normal conditions, L and N currents are equal. If leakage occurs (e.g., human contact), current imbalance activates the tripping mechanism. When difference exceeds sensitivity (e.g., 30mA), it cuts power in 0.1 seconds.
Key Component: Summation Current Transformer

Q4: What is a residual current circuit breaker?

Core Definition:
An RCCB is a life-saving electrical device that detects earth leakage currents caused by:
• Insulation faults • Human electric shock risks
It does NOT provide overcurrent protection (requires pairing with MCB). Main parts:

  • Zero-sequence CT (detects imbalance)

  • Trip solenoid

  • Test button (simulates 10mA-30mA leakage)

Q5: Residual current circuit breaker working principle?

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Phase & neutral wires pass through magnetic core

  2. During leakage, current imbalance creates magnetic flux

  3. Induced current triggers trip mechanism

  4. Contacts open within 30ms (faster than heartbeat)
Test Feature: Pressing test button creates artificial leakage to verify function.

Q6: Difference between ELCB and RCCB?

Evolution of Protection:

Parameter Voltage-ELCB (Obsolete) Current-ELCB (RCCB)
Detection Method Earth wire voltage L/N current imbalance
Sensitivity 500mA-1A 30mA-300mA
Safety Fails if earth wire broken Works without earth wire
Modern Compliance Not IEC 61009-1 IEC 61009-1 Certified

Critical Note:
Modern "ELCB" refers to RCCB in most regions. True voltage-based ELCBs are discontinued due to safety flaws.
